Fillers

Injectable fillers are a minimally invasive way to improve volume loss in the face, resulting in softened lines and creases. There are several different classes of fillers, and depending on your needs and desired aesthetic goals, Dr. Dempsey will help you decide which is right for you.

FAQs

How long do results last?

Depending on the filler used, results may last from 6-24 months.

When will I see results?

Immediately. Full correction will be seen at 2 weeks.

When is the optimal time to get filler?

Dr. Dempsey recommends at least 2 weeks prior to any major event (wedding, reunion) given potential for bruising. If bruising occurs it is usually minor and resolves within a week.

Are fillers reversible?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers (Restylane and Juvederm families) are reversible with an injection of hyaluronidase.

What should I do to prepare for my appointment?

Dr. Dempsey requires that no dental procedures (including routine cleaning) be performed within 1 week prior or 2 weeks after filler injections. There is data to suggest this increases complication risk.

Patients who are taking medications or supplements can increase bleeding are at higher risk of bruising. You should inform Dr. Dempsey before treatment if you are using: Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Vitamin E, Fish Oil, Ginkgo, Green Tea, Garlic, Ginseng, St John’s Wort, or Alcohol. If possible, you should avoid aspirin containing products for 14 days before your procedure, NSAIDS (Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, etc) for 7 days prior to your treatment. Avoid alcohol 48 hours prior to treatment.

I am terrified of having my lips injected. Doesn’t it always look fake?

Dr. Dempsey’s goals of treatment are always to achieve beautiful, natural results. She takes pride in knowing most of her patients are able to keep this a secret even from their closest friends and relatives. She strives to have the outcome be a more refreshed, slightly younger version of you. Others will notice you look better but have a difficult time figuring out why.

Does it really matter who performs my filler treatment?

Yes. Training and experience matter. It is highly recommended that a well-trained physician, preferably a board-certified dermatology or plastic surgeon perform your procedure to prevent complications and give you the best possible results.

What can be treated with fillers?

Fillers can:

  1. Enhance naturally thin lips

  2. Correct hollowed temples (correcting the “peanut head” appearance)

  3. Improve hollowed tear troughs (this corrects the dark circles that are formed from shadowing)

  4. Improve laugh lines (parentheses from the nose to the lips)

  5. Enhance flattened cheeks

  6. Soften creases around the lips and chin

What can I expect during my visit?

A full consultation will be performed prior to injections with a discussion of goals and treatment plan. On day of injections, please arrive without makeup or expect to have it removed in entirety. A numbing cream will be applied to the area for 30 minutes. Ice will be used before, during and after injections to minimize potential of bruising. Injections can take 10 to 30 minutes depending on areas involved.

What can I expect after my injections?

You will be given a handout on instructions but It is normal to be somewhat red, tender, and swollen for several hours after filler injection. In addition, bruising is always possible. It is advised that you continue to ice the area for 1-3 hours at 15 minute intervals,.

  • Avoid Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Fish Oil, Vitamin E, and other non-steroidal anti- inflammatory medications (like Celebrex) for 24 hours to minimize bruising.

  • No alcohol, no smoking, no nicotine, for 24 hours. (Or forever if you want to look younger, be healthier, and live longer). Avoid second-hand smoke as well.

  • No upside-down activities (like YOGA) or vigorous exercise for 24 hours.

  • No dental procedures, including routine cleanings, for 2 weeks after filler.
